Does My Pet Need It?, Is It Worth The Cost?

Part of being a responsible pet owner, is making certain that your pet receives the best veterinarian care to prevent, and treat possible illness. Should your precious pet become ill, you will want him, or her to have the very best care possible.  However, pet health costs can be quite expensive, especially in the event of serious illness or injury. You can lower these out of pocket expenses by purchasing pet insurance.

Additionally, pet insurance can make the difference between just average care for your pet, and the best care available. If you have to pay all of the expenses for treatment yourself, you may not be able to afford everything that is needed. Your pet may have to settle for only minimum care. On the other hand, if you have pet insurance, you will most likely be able to provide your four legged baby with the best care that is offered.

Now you probably have a barrage of questions. How much does pet insurance cost? Do they really pay? If so, how much do they pay per claim? What are the best, and most reliable  companies? Lets address these concerns.

First, the cost of pet insurance varies, depending on the individual company, as well as the coverage package you choose. That being said, the cost is actually not all that  expensive. Most companies offer polices within a fifteen to forty dollar monthly price  range. Considering that if your pet were to need surgery, the price of operations can be several thousand dollars, pet insurance premiums don't seem so expensive. You hope that you never need the insurance, but if you do, it certainly is worth having.

As for the question of legitimacy, yes there are reliable pet insurance companies out there. Here is where a little work on your part is required. Ask your vet to recommend a reliable company. As well, check on line forums and read pet insurance reviews. This will tell you the pros and cons of each company, give you an idea of how well they pay, and how long claims take. Of course, the
better business bureau is always an excellent source for checking a companies reputation, and reliability.

Most pet insurance companies will pay a portion of the cost for annual wellness checkups, and routine preventative care.  Why? The answer, is as you might imagine. It is less expensive to prevent illness, than to treat it. As a result, most insurance companies will actually encourage pet owners to take their pets to the vet at least twice a year, for healthy pet check-ups.

Also, when choosing a policy, be certain that it covers all of the possibilities. You want to know that it will cover accidents, sudden illness, hereditary disease, as well as any needed operations.

Something else that many pet owners don't think to ask about is dental. You want a policy that will cover a portion of teeth cleaning, and also teeth or mouth injuries. Pets can develop teeth, and gum issues, just as people can. They can acquire tooth abscesses, need extractions, and develop gum illness, such as periodontal disease, or gingivitis. Again, you hope that these things never occur, but you want to be prepared just in case.

There are actually some pet insurance companies that specialize in selling policies which cover the cost of dental treatment, and medications. Such companies will reimburse you a portion of the money you pay for certain dental treatments, and any prescribed medications that your pets veterinarian may recommend.

Hospitalization is another area to check, when you purchase insurance for your pet. Make certain that the policy covers any veterinarian hospital stays. If your pet has to stay for extended care, the cost can become quite overwhelming. As a result, you definitely want your pets insurance policy to cover this kind of care.

Do your homework and find the best pet insurance company which meets your pets needs. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Each company should have a customer service line, with representatives who are happy to address all of your concerns. Compare prices as well as benefits. Verify the companies reputation, and payment history. Then choose the best fit for you and your furry loved one.
